The Bizarre Visual Disorder of Prosopometamorphopsia: Living in a Prolonged Nightmare

One morning, Victor Sharrah woke up in a state of fear as he saw his roommate with bizarre features, including pointed ears, giant eyes and a mouth that extended to the edges of his face. Trying to remain calm, Sharrah took her dog for a walk but the people she passed on the street also had equally strange and distorted faces. Feeling like she had entered a world where demons roamed, Sharrah began to panic and even considered being admitted to a psychiatric unit.

After consulting with experts, Sharrah learned that her condition was not a result of losing her mind but rather prosopometamorphopsia or PMO – a rare vision condition in which people see distorted faces in various ways. While Sharrah sees demons, others may see elves or moving faces. Despite experiencing PMO for over three years, research remains unknown about the exact cause of this condition. It is believed to be a symptom rather than a disorder with multiple potential causes.

Despite her unique experience of seeing flat screens as normal, Sharrah found relief through an online support group and now wears glasses with a green tint to alleviate the severity of the distortions. Although she has largely adapted to her strange new world, crowded places can still be overwhelming as “demons” surround her. Many individuals with PMO face difficulty in deciding whether to share their experiences with others due to fear of being perceived as crazy. However, Sharrah felt compelled to share her story in hopes of helping others avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for psychosis and raising awareness about this condition.
