Global Youth Council Launched by TikTok to Enhance Teen Safety on Social Platform | TECHNOLOGY

In response to the growing concerns of parents and guardians regarding the safety of teenagers on social media, TikTok has announced the establishment of a Global Youth Council. The program aims to promote the well-being and inclusion of young people on the platform, with 15 members aged between 15 and 18 from various countries representing different communities.

TikTok, owned by ByteDance, already offers several tools to protect minor users and ensure their safety, such as the Family Synchronization feature. However, this new initiative takes a proactive approach to enhancing security within the application.

The council collaborates with online security agency Praesidio Safeguarding, which provides expertise in security and digital well-being. During their second meeting, members outlined their priorities for the year, focusing on improving the well-being and inclusion of young people. They discussed redesigning the TikTok Youth Portal and gaining more insight into complaints and account blocking processes.

TikTok has also conducted a global study in partnership with ConnectSafely involving over 12,000 adolescents and their guardians. The study demonstrates young people’s willingness to work closely with platforms to enhance safety measures. The company emphasizes external perspectives in enhancing security measures on TikTok and continues to implement innovations focused on this area. For instance, new media literacy campaigns will be launched in the United States aimed at countering misinformation and AI-generated content.

In conclusion, TikTok’s Global Youth Council is an important step towards creating a safe space where young people can freely express themselves while also promoting their well-being and inclusion on the platform. The council’s collaboration with Praesidio Safeguarding ensures that they have access to expert knowledge in security and digital well-being. With ongoing efforts from both TikTok and external partners like ConnectSafely, it is clear that this program has significant potential to make a positive impact on young users’ experiences on social media platforms.
