Stellantis Issues Recall for Vehicles with Stability Control Problems

Stellantis, a car manufacturer, has announced the recall of 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that could potentially lead to the failure of their electronic stability control systems. The defect is linked to an anti-lock braking system that deactivates the stability control system, which is a critical safety feature in many vehicles. This system helps maintain control of the vehicle during emergency situations such as on icy or flooded roads by preventing a loss of steering capabilities.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises against using vehicles with disabled stability systems as it increases the risk of accidents. Studies have shown that electronic stability control systems can significantly reduce fatal collisions, especially in single-vehicle and rollover crashes. Since 2012, all new passenger cars have been required to have an ESC system by the NHTSA.

The models being recalled are the 2022 Dodge Durango, 2022 Ram 2500, and 2022 Ram 3500. Of these models, the Ram 2500 is the most affected with nearly 158,000 pickups being recalled. Additionally, over 53,000 Durangos and approximately 524 Ram 3500s are also part of the recall. Stellantis plans to notify affected vehicle owners starting in late July and customers will be able to bring their vehicles to dealers for a free update to their anti-lock braking systems.

Despite CNN’s request for comment, Stellantis has not responded at this time.
