Upcoming Science Saturday: Weather Forecasting Discussion on March 30

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences has organized a Science Saturday session on March 30, 2024. Michael Folmer, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md., will be presenting at 11 a.m. via Zoom. The session is free to attend and is open to all interested individuals.

Folmer’s presentation will focus on his work with “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore.” He provides forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services to various entities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry, and everyday mariners who venture beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. Folmer will also touch on the Jersey Shore Mesonet, a network of automated weather stations that includes the LBIF weather station. He plans to expand this network further in the future.

Although Folmer has a background in tropical meteorology, his main focuses now include satellite and mid-latitude weather. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as the satellite liaison for several satellite programs, gaining expertise in the field. To register for Science Saturday lectures online or through email subscriptions from LBIF can be done by visiting or emailing them directly at [insert email address].
