Scarlett Johansson in Negotiations for Role in Universal’s ‘Jurassic World’ Film Directed by Gareth Edwards

Gareth Edwards-directed Jurassic World reboot at Universal has landed two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson. The news of her involvement in the project has been circulating for some time and appears to be quite solid, according to insiders. This new venture puts Johansson in business with another major movie franchise, following her Black Widow days at Marvel. Her tenure at Marvel resulted in a legal battle with Disney over the 2021 pandemic release of that film, which was eventually settled.

Universal is moving quickly to assemble the project for a July 2, 2025 release. David Koepp, who adapted the first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton’s classic novel, is penning the latest iteration of Jurassic World. The new movie is said to be a fresh take on the Jurassic era, but cast members from previous Jurassic World films such as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are not expected to return, nor are original trilogy actors Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill.

Jurassic World will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, with Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley producing through Kennedy-Marshall. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the production at Universal. The Jurassic Park franchise has grossed $5.67 billion at the global box office since its inception in 1993 with director Steven Spielberg’s original film followed by two sequels – The Lost World (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001). In 2015, Universal revived the franchise with Jurassic World, which was followed by Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022).

Scarlett Johansson made headlines last year for being nominated for Best Actress for Netflix’s Marriage Story and Supporting Actress for Searchlight’s Taika Waititi-directed JoJo Rabbit in 2020. This new role adds another feather to her impressive cap as she continues to make waves in Hollywood’s film industry.
