Jaelyne Matthews chooses Rutgers football over Georgia, Miami, and Tennessee

In the spring, offensive lineman Jaelyne Matthews made waves by announcing his college commitment to Rutgers football. Despite having offers from Georgia, Miami, and Tennessee, Matthews ultimately chose Rutgers, a decision that surprised many.

Standing tall at 6-foot-7 and weighing in at 337 pounds, Matthews currently plays offensive tackle for Toms River North High School in New Jersey. His commitment to Rutgers makes him the highest-ranked verbal commit from the state of New Jersey and the top recruit in the 2025 class. This is a significant pickup for Rutgers as Matthews is ranked No. 93 nationally by ESPN and a top-25 offensive tackle according to On3 Industry Rankings.

In addition to his impressive rankings, Matthews has also been selected to play in the prestigious Under Armour All-America Game. His commitment to Rutgers adds to a strong recruiting class that is currently ranked among the top 15 nationally.

Notably, Matthews’ commitment comes after two other four-star recruits joined Rutgers’ recruiting class in just three days. Safety Tariq Hayer committed on Sunday following an official visit, and offensive lineman Josh Blackston committed on Monday, adding even more depth to Rutgers’ already strong class.

Matthews received his first offer from Rutgers after his freshman year and stayed loyal to the program despite receiving offers from other top schools. After visiting both Rutgers and Miami, Matthews ultimately decided to stay close to home and join the Scarlet Knights.
