The Pope’s Extended Silence at Palm Sunday Mass Reignites Speculation on His Health During Easter

Pope Francis has been dealing with respiratory problems that make it difficult for him to give speeches. During Palm Sunday celebrations, the Pope did not deliver his homily, resulting in a long silence that spread to the faithful in attendance. Despite the speculation, the Vatican did not provide an explanation for the Pope’s silence, simply stating that the homily was “non-existent.”

Despite these challenges, the Pope resumed the ceremony with the Creed and briefly condemned a terrorist attack in Moscow at the end of it. He then greeted the faithful in St. Peter’s Square. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera interviewed the surgeon who operated on him twice, asking about his health conditions. The surgeon responded that while he has episodes of respiratory difficulty due to past lung surgeries, Francis is well for his age.

As a result of his demanding role as head of state and leader of Catholic Church, concerns about Francis’ health have been raised by many. However, despite his age and health challenges, he continues to fulfill his responsibilities and maintain a rigorous schedule. With important events on the horizon like Synod of Synods and international trips planned, Francis’ health will continue to be closely monitored by those around him.
