NFL prohibits hip-drop tackle despite NFLPA’s protests

The NFL has made a major move to improve player safety by officially banning the hip-drop tackle after a vote at the spring owner’s meetings in Orlando, Florida. A source close to the league confirmed the news to Yahoo Sports just hours before the announcement.

The decision comes after months of pressure from players, coaches, and medical professionals to ban the dangerous tackle, which results in about 25 times higher rate of injury compared to a typical tackle. There has been some debate over what exactly constitutes a hip-drop tackle, but competition committee chairman Rich McKay played a video compilation of examples during media availability to clarify.

The ban is specifically for the “swivel” version of the hip-drop tackle, which may be difficult for officials to consistently enforce. However, the NFL plans to train officials to look for three specific elements when enforcing the new rule – grabbing the opponent, swiveling them, and unweighting them.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) released a statement ahead of the owners meetings expressing their concern about confusion for players, coaches, officials and fans with this proposed ban. Several prominent players like Dolphins safety Jevon Holland and Vikings safety Josh Metellus have spoken out against the rule change, while others like J.J. Watt and Kenyan Drake have also weighed in later on social media platforms.

This ban is a positive step towards ensuring that all players are treated fairly and safely on the field. The NFL has taken steps in recent years to address player safety concerns and this ban is an important step in that direction.
