Star Harvard Guard Malik Mack Decides to Enter NCAA Transfer Portal | Sports

Harvard men’s basketball guard Malik Mack has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a source close to the situation. While Mack has not made a final decision on whether to leave Harvard, there has been speculation that he may be looking for a new program in a larger conference where NIL payments are allowed, in order to potentially earn a significant amount of money.

Mack, who did not comment on the matter, had an impressive first year at Harvard, averaging 17.2 points, 4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. This placed him third in the nation among freshmen in points per game. Mack was also named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and recognized on the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List.

However, despite his successes during his time at Harvard, the Crimson’s season ended prematurely as they finished just outside of qualification for postseason play in the Ivy League. If Mack were to leave Harvard, it would be a significant loss for the team considering his impact and accolades throughout the season.

Mack initially chose Harvard over other offers in 2022 due to his relationship with Head Coach Tommy Amaker. However, one factor that may have influenced his decision was Harvard’s lack of an NIL collective agreement at that time. Forward Justice Ajogbor also entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer in March, adding another layer of complexity to Harvard’s basketball program.

These developments highlight the challenges faced by student-athletes navigating the evolving landscape of college sports and trying to find programs that offer both academic excellence and financial opportunities through NIL deals.
