The Giants formally say goodbye to Darren Waller

Darren Waller’s trade from the Raiders to the Giants initially seemed like a promising move, with New York giving up a third-round pick for the talented tight end. However, despite appearing in 12 games, Waller only caught 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown for the Giants, who also paid over $11 million for his services.

Waller faced hamstring issues that limited his playing time throughout his time with the Giants. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to reach the level of success he had achieved with the Raiders. Injuries became a recurring problem for him in 2021, leading to a decline in his performance.

Despite these challenges, Waller remained determined to continue playing professional football. At the age of 31, he decided to retire from the NFL after three years with the Giants. The team expressed their respect for him as both a person and player in a statement confirming his retirement, wishing him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

Waller’s time with the Raiders was marked by success, as he recorded thousand-yard seasons in both 2019 and 2020. Throughout his career, Waller showcased his talent and potential when healthy. Despite not achieving the success he had hoped for during his time with the Giants, he remains a respected figure in professional sports today.

Trading for Waller was a calculated risk for the Giants due to his undeniable talent on paper. Although things did not work out as expected in this instance, such risks are sometimes worth taking in an ever-unpredictable world of professional sports.
