Health Center in Boston Offers Direct Delivery of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to Patients in Need

A Boston program run by New Health, a health center affiliated with Mass General Hospital and Boston Medical Center, is tackling food insecurity by directly providing fresh fruits and vegetables to patients in need. This initiative is part of their holistic approach to care for individuals in the community, according to Dan Coakley, public affairs coordinator for New Health.

During a recent visit by WBZ-TV cameras to the New Health location in Charlestown, they observed the food distribution firsthand. This program was developed in response to the increasing food insecurity seen among their patient population. Every month, New Health purchases bags of fresh produce to distribute to patients who have been notified in advance, including items like bananas, apples, oranges, avocados, asparagus, onions, and potatoes.

The impact of this initiative goes beyond just the individual patients who receive the produce. Many patients share the food with others in need, extending its reach to help 10-15 people each time a bag is distributed. Any leftover produce is placed in a community refrigerator for anyone in need to access. Patient Carmen Tirado expressed her gratitude for the help provided by the program, highlighting how crucial it is to support those facing food insecurity within the community.

According to Coakley, the positive feedback and impact of this program continue to drive their commitment towards providing this resource to everyone who needs it. This initiative not only addresses food security but also fosters a sense of community support and care for those facing challenges when it comes to accessing fresh and healthy food options.

In summary, New Health’s Boston program is taking direct action against food insecurity by providing fresh fruits and vegetables directly to patients who need them most. The impact of this initiative extends far beyond just those receiving the produce as many patients share it with others in need within their community. This holistic approach towards care continues
