Facial recognition technology returning for a second year at British Grand Prix

The British Grand Prix, set to take place from July 4th to 7th, will once again be utilizing facial recognition technology in collaboration with Northamptonshire Police. The event is expected to attract around 480,000 spectators. This technology was first employed by the police force during the Silverstone race in 2023.

Det Supt Richard Tompkins of Northamptonshire Police expressed his pride in working with Silverstone and emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against potential threats. The technology operates by scanning faces with a camera and comparing biometrics against a watchlist. Signs and QR codes will be used to clearly indicate where live facial recognition is being used.

The goal of this technology is to prevent criminals from attending the event, particularly those who are wanted in Northamptonshire or surrounding areas. Manual checks, including fingerprints, will also be conducted if someone is identified using the technology to minimize the risk of wrongful identification.

Prior concerns about the use of facial recognition technology included issues related to its application and data protection. However, Mr. Tompkins emphasized that public safety was the primary objective, similar to initial concerns about CCTV in public towns.

Despite these concerns, Mr. Tompkins believed that as long as it contributes to keeping people safe, using facial recognition technology is a worthwhile endeavor. The force remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all attendees at the British Grand Prix.

Northamptonshire Police has been using facial recognition technology at high-profile events such as music festivals and sporting events for several years now as part of their efforts to maintain public safety and prevent criminal activity during large gatherings.
