Omaha Police collaborating with mental health professionals and first responders

The Omaha Police Department recently co-hosted the fifth annual Co-Responder Conference at CHI Health Center, with over 900 mental health professionals and first responders from across the country in attendance. During the conference, participants collaborated and shared insights on how co-responder programs can be expanded and enhanced in their respective cities.

Robert McKeirnan, a Police Sergeant with Olathe, Kansas PD, emphasized the importance of providing the right services to individuals in crisis at the right time by the right person. Many cities in the United States are recognizing the need for effective solutions, and co-responder programs are being looked to as a model for meeting those needs.

In Omaha, the Police Department receives an average of around 900 mental health related service calls per month. Lindsay Kroll, the Mental Health Coordinator for the Omaha Police Department, highlighted that they have significant face-to-face interactions with individuals in need and numerous phone calls made and connections established with other providers and family members to ensure that individuals receive necessary support.

The co-responder program in Omaha was established in 2018 and focuses on having mental health professionals work alongside law enforcement officers to address situations involving mental health crises effectively. Each police precinct in Omaha has a co-responder embedded within it, and there is also a specific youth co-responder who collaborates closely with the city’s school districts to provide support. Kroll emphasized that co-responders play a crucial role in assisting law enforcement officers during responses to crime scenes or critical incidents particularly when there may be emotional disruptions for families, friends, and neighbors. By partnering with these individuals, co-responders can help support people through traumatic experiences.
