I was alone on a winding trail, surrounded by snow and the warmth of the sun on my face. As I climbed uphill, I missed my partner but felt grateful to visit my sister. The solitude was both overwhelming and comforting at once. It was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s interesting how our emotions can fluctuate during periods of solitude. I felt curious, anxious, and joyful all at once. But as an adult in the UK or US, I’m not alone for long periods of time. Many people spend around one-third of their waking hours alone, with this number increasing as we age. In fact, more than 17 countries have more than 25 percent solo households. However, research suggests that spending time alone may be essential to our health and well-being. Even though we are social creatures by nature, many people now crave time away from the crowd. So why is it that alone time can feel so good? Well, studies have shown that spending time alone can lower stress levels and improve moods. It also allows us to focus on our own needs and desires without distraction from others. Ultimately, it seems that solitude is not something to be feared but rather embraced as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery
