Britain’s Betrayal: Promises versus Reality in its Relationship with Israel

The Israeli government launched a war in Gaza after the October 7 terrorist attack, and the British government promised to support Israel without reservations. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in Israel on a transport plane carrying weapons and military equipment for the IDF just a few days after the attack, declaring “unlimited support for Israel in the face of evil.” British Foreign Minister at the time, James Cleverly, also expressed his support for Israel’s right and duty to defend itself.

However, six months later, Britain is now threatening to impose an arms embargo on Israel if it invades Rafah. The British government has been critical of Israel’s role in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The British ambassador to the UN voted in favor of a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza without condemning Hamas for the October 7 attacks.

The shift in British position can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, there has been a general erosion of support for Israel in the West due to its failure to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and continued military operations that have resulted in high Palestinian casualties. Secondly, there is a lack of discussion about the aftermath of the conflict among Western leaders. Thirdly, there has been a change in leadership within the British Foreign Ministry under Prime Minister Cameron, which has resulted in a more critical stance towards Israel.

In addition to these factors, public opinion plays an important role in shaping British foreign policy towards Israel. A recent survey showed low support for Israeli military activity in Gaza and higher sympathy for Palestinians among the British public. This shift in public opinion has influenced British foreign policy towards Israel, as seen by recent Security Council votes.

As a result of this shift, the British Foreign Office is now exploring whether Israel violated international law during its military operations
