JMU Sports News: Mark Byington Departs for Vanderbilt

Mark Byington, JMU’s head men’s basketball coach, has announced that he is leaving the university to join Vanderbilt. With a record of 82-36 during his tenure at JMU, Byington led the Dukes to the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24. Despite a victory over Wisconsin in the first round, they were defeated by Duke in the second round of the tournament.

JMU is now facing the challenge of finding a replacement for Byington quickly as players are securing spots on teams for the upcoming season. The university also faces significant changes with President Jonathan Alger announcing his departure for this summer and Jeff Bourne retiring from his position as athletic director. This leaves JMU with two important positions to fill: an athletic director and a head men’s basketball coach.

JMU has already undergone significant changes within its athletic department, with changes taking place at various levels. With Bob Chesney recently hired as head football coach following Curt Cignetti’s departure for Indiana, it will be crucial for JMU to make quick decisions on its next hires to keep up with the competition in college sports.
