The Hop Long Cable Car Bridge in China boasts the world’s largest span

The Changtai Yangtze River Bridge, located in East China’s Jiangsu province, was fully connected on June 9 and is expected to open to traffic by the end of April next year. This bridge connects the cities of Changzhou and Taizhou in Jiangsu province and is a remarkable feat of engineering as it combines highways, urban railways, and normal roads across the Yangtze River.

After five years of construction, the bridge has a total length of 10.3 km, including a 5.3 km long road-rail section. The bridge complex holds many world records in terms of span and size. It features the largest span suspension bridge, the largest road-rail steel truss arch bridge, and the longest continuous steel truss bridge.

The construction team applied meticulous techniques to achieve high precision during the construction process, with a deviation rate of less than 2 mm. Li Haifeng, deputy director at the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge construction site, mentioned that dynamic and static load testing as well as acceptance testing will be conducted by the end of April next year before the bridge opens to traffic. Once completed, this bridge will significantly strengthen the regional transportation network and enhance development cooperation in the Yangtze River Delta. It will also support national-level programs like Belt and Road Initiative and Yangtze River Economic Belt development.

This project is a testament to technical achievements as it showcases how engineering can bring about significant change in infrastructure development. With its impressive features such as world-record spans and sizes, this bridge is an example of what is possible when engineers apply their expertise to constructing large-scale projects like this one.
